Premiere tonight at the New York Film Festival, “13” is to open the first documentary in the festival in its history 54 years. Director Ava Duvernay makes a solid, competent and explored in the American prison system, especially when the prison industrial complex affects people of color. His analysis could not be more time and more annoying. The film builds to break his fall bit by bit, inspiring levels of shock and indignation that numb the viewer, leaving a shocked and upset to end on a hopeful note designed to keep the attention on the hook as a promoter of change.An in-depth look at the prison system in the United States and how it reveals the nation’s history of racial inequality.
